Martin Dillon | Barrister, Arbitrator & Legal Adviser

Martin Dillon

Barrister | Arbitrator | Mediator | Legal Adviser

I am a New Zealand barrister whose practice spans dispute resolution, legal advisory work, independent investigations, and criminal defence.

Over time, my work has evolved from a primarily litigation-focused practice into a broader professional role that includes acting as an arbitrator and mediator, providing independent legal advice, and conducting investigations and reviews in sensitive or complex matters. Criminal defence remains an ongoing part of my practice.

Professional background

I have practised law since 2007. My background includes experience in civil litigation, criminal advocacy, and advisory work across a wide range of legal contexts.

Earlier in my career, I worked as a Crown Prosecutor, an experience that continues to inform my approach to criminal defence, evidential assessment, and procedural decision-making. I now practise as a barrister from chambers, undertaking work independently of any law firm.

Current practice

My practice today is centred on five principal areas:

  • Arbitration — acting as an independent arbitrator in commercial and civil disputes
  • Mediation — facilitating negotiated outcomes in complex disputes
  • Legal advisory services — providing independent legal opinions and strategic advice
  • Independent investigations and reviews — conducting impartial inquiries into sensitive matters
  • Criminal defence — representing defendants in serious and complex criminal cases

These services are undertaken under distinct professional frameworks and engagement terms, but all are grounded in independence, procedural fairness, and careful judgement.

Approach

My work is characterised by a calm, structured, and analytical approach. I focus on understanding the real issues in dispute, assessing risk realistically, and helping parties reach outcomes that are principled, durable, and appropriate to their circumstances.

I place particular emphasis on:

  • independence and ethical clarity
  • proportionality of process
  • clear reasoning and communication
  • respect for all participants in legal processes

Technology, systems, and complexity

Alongside legal practice, I have a long-standing interest in technology, systems, and complex problem-solving.

Since 2005, I have developed Aria3D, a long-term technology research project exploring spatial audio navigation and non-visual information systems. I also founded CourtKeys, an access-to-justice initiative focused on explaining legal processes in plain language.

These projects reflect an enduring interest in how complex systems operate, how people interact with them, and how clarity can be improved – perspectives that inform my work as an adviser, arbitrator, and investigator, particularly in matters involving technical or organisational complexity.

Publications and legal education

I am the author of Civil Litigation for Non-Lawyers (published 2021), a plain-English guide to civil litigation in New Zealand.

The book developed out of earlier public legal education work and reflects a continuing commitment to clarity, accessibility, and informed participation in legal processes.

Practice structure

I practise from 109 Chambers in Hamilton, New Zealand. Much of my work is conducted remotely using secure online platforms, allowing me to act for parties and counsel across jurisdictions where appropriate.

I am assisted in criminal defence matters by an employed barrister, and I manage my workload carefully to ensure that all matters receive appropriate attention and preparation.

Professional standing

I hold a Bachelor of Laws and a Bachelor of Arts, am admitted to practise before the High Court of New Zealand, and maintain current professional standing. I hold professional indemnity insurance exceeding the minimum requirements set by the New Zealand Law Society.
