Independent investigations and reviews

I conduct independent investigations and reviews into serious, sensitive, or complex matters where objectivity, discretion, and sound judgement are essential.

These engagements commonly arise where organisations require an impartial assessment of allegations, conduct, systems, or decision-making — and where confidence in the independence and integrity of the process is critical.

When investigations or reviews are engaged

Clients typically engage me to conduct an independent investigation or review where:

  • Allegations raise legal, regulatory, or reputational risk
  • Internal processes require external scrutiny
  • Independence from management or existing advisers is required
  • Findings need to withstand internal, regulatory, or public examination

My role is to assess the issues carefully, fairly, and without preconception.

Scope of investigations and reviews

Investigations and reviews may include:

  • Reviews of governance, decision-making, or compliance processes
  • Assessment of alleged misconduct or failures
  • Independent factual findings and analysis
  • Recommendations for remedial or preventative action

Each engagement is defined by clear terms of reference and tailored to the circumstances of the matter.

Approach and methodology

My approach to investigations and reviews is structured, proportionate, and legally informed.

This typically involves:

  • Establishing clear scope and terms of reference
  • Identifying relevant legal and procedural frameworks
  • Gathering and assessing documentary and testimonial material
  • Conducting interviews where appropriate
  • Evaluating evidence objectively and systematically
  • Producing clear, reasoned findings and recommendations

Throughout the process, I remain mindful of procedural fairness, confidentiality, and the potential downstream consequences of findings.

Independence and fairness

Independence is central to the credibility of any investigation or review. I do not act as advocate or decision-maker for the commissioning organisation, and I approach each matter with neutrality and an open mind.

Where individuals may be affected by findings, I take care to ensure fairness, transparency of process, and appropriate opportunity to respond.

Confidentiality and sensitivity

Investigations often involve sensitive material and personal information. I manage confidentiality carefully and work with clients to ensure information is handled appropriately and securely.

Where findings may have legal, employment, or regulatory implications, the process is conducted with due care and professional rigour.

Delivery and format

Investigations and reviews are commonly conducted through a combination of document review and interviews, although site visits may also be appropriate. Engagements can primarily be carried out remotely, with in-person engagement arranged as required.

Deliverables may include:

  • Written investigation or review reports
  • Analysis, factual findings and recommendations
  • Briefings to boards or senior leadership

Relationship to other services

Independent investigations and reviews are undertaken as distinct engagements with clear role separation from my other legal work. I do not act in multiple roles concerning the same party at the same time, or in any role at all that would compromise independence or fairness.
